SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOV.com) - A bi-partisan group of Illinois legislators is proposing a soda tax to reduce the state’s debt.
Under the plan, a one cent per ounce tax would be leveled on sugary drinks.
In recent years, other states have passed similar bills. State Senator Donne Trotter said the tax would generate $375 million per year. Trotter said it will take more than a soda tax to solve Illinois budget problems, but says the state must get creative to find new sources of revenue.
Advocates for the bill say it would not only raise revenue, but also make residents healthier by making soda more expensive.
Most Illinois residents who spoke to News 4 believe the tax is a bad idea.
The bill has yet to reach the floor of the state house or senate.
