The ecological devastation of Conflict Palm Oil is evident: we know that palm oil, found in half of all packaged goods in your local grocery store, is driving the extinction of Sumatran orangutans, elephants, tigers, and rhinos. We’ve watched as hundreds of thousands of acres of critical rainforest and peatlands have been cleared, drained and burned for palm oil plantation expansion.
What we don’t hear about as much, however, are the people behind Conflict Palm Oil: the workers on those plantations, suffering under the same exploitative system.
Workers on palm oil plantations––including men, women, and children––are being exploited every single day to make Conflict Palm Oil. PepsiCo is turning a blind eye to the impacts of its palm oil supply chain. As Conflict Palm Oil companies cheat their workers out of fair pay and benefits, poison them with toxic chemicals, force them to bring their children and spouses to work through an unjust wage system, and even sometimes traffic and enslave their workers, PepsiCo does nothing.
Over the course of the last two years, PepsiCo has failed over and over again to take meaningful action and address its Conflict Palm Oil problem. We cannot let the snack food giant get away with it! Every day that PepsiCo refuses to take action is another day where palm oil workers are exploited, children are working on plantations rather than in school, and ecosystems are destroyed.
Right now, we are ramping up pressure on the individuals and investors who sign off each and every day on PepsiCo’s flawed business model––including the company's CEO, Ms. Indra Nooyi, and other major shareholders. We need you to stand in solidarity with workers as we take our demands to end palm oil worker exploitation to PepsiCo’s annual shareholder meeting in early May.
