Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices Docket Number: AMS-NOP-15-0012; NOP-15-06PRComments received by: Comments will be available once the proposed rule posts in the Federal Register.  Note: The following notice has been submitted to the Office of the Federal Register for publication. While USDA-AMS has taken steps to ensure the accuracy of this Internet version of the notice, it is not the official version. Upon publication in the Federal Register, the official version will be available at www.federalregister.gov and www.regulations.gov. SummaryThis proposed rule would create greater consistency in organic livestock practices. AMS has determined that the current USDA organic regulations (7 CFR Part 205) covering livestock health care practices and living conditions need additional specificity and clarity to better ensure consistent compliance by certified organic operations and to provide for more effective administration of the National Organic Program (NOP) by AMS. One purpose of the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 (OFPA) (7 U.S.C. 6501-6522) is to assure consumers that organically produced products meet a consistent and uniform standard (7 U.S.C. 6501). By facilitating improved compliance and enforcement of the USDA organic regulations, the proposed regulations would better satisfy consumer expectations that organic livestock meet a uniform and verifiable animal welfare standard. Submit CommentsComments will be available once the proposed rule posts in the Federal Register ContactPaul Lewis, Ph.D., Director of Standards DivisionTelephone: (202) 720-3252; Fax: (202) 205-7808 Supporting DocumentsProposed Rule (pdf)Questions & Answers About the Proposed Rule  Stakeholder Call Transcript (pdf)
