5th Annual Childhood Obesity Bay Area Conference

Slow Food San Francisco's Annual Childhood Obesity Bay Area Conference is entering it's 5th year, and we are excited to look back at the progress we have made as a community as well as our goals for the coming years. This year's conference will feature keynote speakers, panels, break out sessions, and plenty of opportunities to connect with colleagues at an optional garden tour, slow food lunch, and reception featuring sustainable wineries and local eateries. Dr. Louise Greenspan is a pediatric endocrinologist at Kaiser Permanente, faculty member at UCSF, and co-author of The New Puberty: How to Navigate Early Development in Today's Girls. Dr. Greenspan will speak to how our modern environment impacts the hormonal health of children and their risk for obesity. Dr. Elissa Epel is Director of UCSF's Center for Obesity Assesment, Study, and Treatment, and Professor of Psychiatry at UCSF. Dr. Epel will speak to her work on Race, Stress and Dysregulated Eating: Maternal to Child Transmission of Obesity. Dr. Richard Jackson is a pediatrician and professor at the Fielding School of Public Health at UCLA. He is co-author of the book and PBS series, Designing Healthy Communities. Dr. Jackson will speak to the impact of the built environment and urban sprawl on childhood health and obesity. -Ben Mand, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Innovation at Plum Organics Collaborative Solutions: Comprehensive Care Teams in Obesity Treatment -Amy L. Beck MD MPH, Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital -Pauline Grissom, MS, RD, CSP, Pediatric Nutritionist, Children's Health Center at SFGH -Sarah Kim, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital Fructose and Childhood Obesity and Diabetes: Research and Recommendations -Led by Jean-Marc Schwarz, PhD, Professor at Touro University California and co-author on recent research regarding sugar specific impact on health. Open Truth: Successful Public Health Campaign and Partnerships Child Self Perceptions and Obesity: Social Status, Weight, and Discrimination -Led by Miranda Ritterman Weintraub, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Public Health Program at Touro University California We hope you can join us for an optional garden tour at Alice Fong Yu Elementary School at 9am before the conference. In the upcoming year they are working to construct an outdoor teaching kitchen to provide "farm-to-fork" cooking lessons, which are aligned with Common Core and California State Science Standards.
