Today Food & Wine magazine reveals its list of the Best New Chefs for 2016. The 11 winners come from restaurants in nine different cities across the country. According to a press release, Food & Wine's editors "choose the Best New Chefs after a months-long selection process." They gather recommendations and nominations "from restaurant critics, food writers, and other trusted experts." Only "chefs who have been in charge of a kitchen for five years or fewer" are considered. Then the editors visit each restaurant "incognito" to taste the food. Previous winners include chefs Daniel Boulud, Thomas Keller, April Bloomfield, Nancy Silverton, Tom Colicchio, Michael Symon, Stephanie Izard, David Chang, Wylie Dufresne, and Nobu Matsuhisa.
This was likely the last time longtime editor-in-chief Dana Cowin weighed in on Food & Wine's Best New Chefs; she stepped down from her position this year. Nilou Motamed is Food & Wine's new editor-in-chief.
The new class of Best New Chefs 2016 will be featured in the July issue of Food & Wine magazine, and will also be showcased at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen from June 17 until June 19.
