The DARK Act Strikes Back

The DARK Act is Back. Senators acting under orders of their big food and chemical company donors have introduced a new DARK Act that would overturn democratically-passed laws to label genetically engineered (GE) foods in Vermont and other states and block the government from ever implementing mandatory nationwide GE food labeling. They’ve tried this before.  Last year Monsanto and its friends in the food industry tried and failed to pass the DARK (Denying Americans the Right to Know) Act—but we defeated it because of your letters and calls.  But they are at it again and we need you to act again. This is where we are. The Senate bill, introduced by Senator Roberts (R-KS) will be marked up in the Senate Agriculture Committee on Thursday, Feb. 25th. This bill would preempt any and all state mandatory labeling and leave consumers with nothing but “voluntary” labeling so each company using genetic engineering can choose whether or not to disclose that to the public. But for 15 years companies have been free to label their products as containing GE ingredients and not a single company has yet implemented labeling.  So let’s be very clear: “voluntary labeling” means “no labeling.”  The entire future of the labeling of genetically engineered foods is on the line. Your right to know could be permanently lost if this bill passes.  Don’t let Congress take away your right to know. Tell your Senators to oppose the DARK Act and support mandatory GE labeling.
