The Edible Schoolyard Project trains educators to create powerful and sustainable edible education programs in their schools and communities. Learn and experience first-hand the core principles and practical tools for bringing academic subjects to life in the kitchen, garden, and lunchroom.
This summer, we are offering two trainings for teachers, administrators, food service professionals, and advocates on site at the Edible Schoolyard Berkeley in California.
The application deadline for both programs is March 13, 2016. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by email on or before March 25, 2016.

The Edible Schoolyard Academy is designed to strengthen your program and build your leadership in the field. Over the course of five days, Academy participants will have an opportunity to learn about curriculum integration and development, funding strategies, evaluation, volunteer management, class scheduling, rituals and routines of garden and kitchen classrooms, outreach strategies, and much more. In the Academy agenda, all participants spend one day on school gardens, cooking with kids, and organizational development. The Academy is best suited for programs who are 1-5 years old. We welcome programs from across the United States as well as international programs to attend the Edible Schoolyard Academy. We prioritize groups of three to five participants and organizations who have sent a team before and want to train new staff. We strive to create programming that is relevant to and adaptable for programs working with diverse populations – in age, background, interest, and geography – and in a variety of institutions. We strongly encourage applicants from a diversity of backgrounds, particularly from historically marginalized communities most impacted by the consequences of an unjust food system and underrepresented in the fields of education, health, and the environment. Teams who will contribute to the diversity of our training programs will be given preference during the review process.

The three-day training will focus on relationships between food service staff members, school and district leadership, and classroom, garden and kitchen educators. Participants will learn strategies for integrating innovative food procurement and hands-on experiential learning that teaches children how to grow, cook, understand, and value food in their daily lives.
The Edible Schoolyard Intensive is designed for programs that participate in the USDA’s child nutrition programs (i.e. the National School Lunch Program, Summer Food Service Program, National School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Programs, or Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program). We welcome participating programs from across the United States with a demonstrated commitment to an integrated approach to edible education.
The Edible Schoolyard Intensive solely accepts teams consisting of three to five members. Team members might include educators, school food service staff, administrators, or supply chain and community partners. One member of the team attending the Intensive must represent your school or district's food service program. As part of the application, you will be asked to provide a letter of support from your school or district administration.
