BALTIMORE — In an effort to address health concerns among children, Baltimore officials introduced legislation that would require businesses to post warning signs of sugary drinks. Councilman Nick Mosby and City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen introduced the legislation Monday. It would require businesses that sell or advertise sugary drinks to post signs warning customers that they contribute to tooth decay, obesity and diabetes. The city’s health department would provide the signs to businesses and failure to display them would result in a $500 civil penalty. Wen says the biggest contributor to childhood obesity is sugary drinks. She’s calling on the public to do what they can to protect the health of children. Mosby and Wen are following the lead of San Francisco after a similar measure was adopted in that city. Copyright 2016 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
